A richer day.

These are separate route choices. A museum visit, distant shrine and several workshops are not all squeezed into the same walking tour.

Route 01 · Half-day proposal · allow roughly 3–4 hours

Shrines, river lanes and the old bazaar

Khanqah-e-Moula · Zaina Kadal · Maharaj Gunj · Jamia Masjid / Nowhatta

Begin near Khanqah-e-Moula for an introduction to the Jhelum-side city, then explore selected lanes around Zaina Kadal and Maharaj Gunj before continuing towards Jamia Masjid and the Nowhatta market area. The guide adjusts the direction, walking length and stops around prayer, access and your pace. A short vehicle link can be requested; this is not an all-sites guarantee.

Places, experiences & walking notes
  • Khanqah-e-Moula / Shah-e-Hamdan: architecture and the river setting; interior access only when permitted
  • Zaina Kadal and Maharaj Gunj: bridge-side streets, traders and copperware browsing
  • Jamia Masjid and Nowhatta: timber architecture, courtyard and surrounding market when access allows
  • Optional bakery and kahwa pause: food preferences and cost agreed first

Uneven lanes, steps, crowds and limited drop-off points. Discuss walking limits, seating and a shorter route before booking.

Route 02 · Separate half-day or a slower full-day proposal

Bait-ul-Meeras and the maker’s workshop

Bait-ul-Meeras, Aali Kadal · one appointed craft visit · optional old-city lanes

Explore Bait-ul-Meeras, HELP Foundation’s heritage house and cultural centre in Aali Kadal, then choose one appointed craft visit. The gallery introduces everyday objects, dress and making traditions. Ask the centre which galleries and demonstrations are available for your date; library, manuscript access and hands-on activities are not assumed. Keep enough time for questions instead of combining every craft with a long shrine circuit.

Places, experiences & walking notes
  • Bait-ul-Meeras, Aali Kadal: confirm opening, visitor arrangements, fees and photography rules
  • One carpet or shawl-weaving demonstration: host, craft and visit fee confirmed by appointment
  • Papier-mâché, sozni, walnut carving or khatamband: choose an alternative demonstration rather than assuming every workshop
  • Nearby old-city lanes: an optional short walk if the visit leaves time

Walking and vehicle-assisted visits can be discussed. Workshop stairs and museum access must be checked individually.

Route 03 · A separate day · choose two or three sites

Sacred Srinagar, at your own pace

Hazratbal · Hari Parbat area · optional Shankaracharya visit

Plan a respectful introduction to Srinagar’s different living traditions. Hazratbal can be paired with selected sites around the Hari Parbat area, such as Chatti Padshahi Gurdwara or Sharika Devi Temple, according to guest interests and current permission. Shankaracharya is a separate hill approach with steps and security arrangements; choose it as an alternative rather than squeezing it into every circuit.

Places, experiences & walking notes
  • Hazratbal: shrine surroundings and a lakeside pause when visits are permitted
  • Chatti Padshahi Gurdwara: a respectful visit following the local community’s guidance
  • Sharika Devi Temple: an optional Hari Parbat-area visit, subject to access and walking suitability
  • Shankaracharya Temple: an alternative hill visit after checking steps, access and security rules

Some sites involve substantial steps. Religious interiors and ceremonies are never guaranteed visitor experiences.

Craft, with context

Meet the skill
behind the object.

Choose one appointed demonstration and give the maker time. Learning, questions and fair payment for a host’s time matter more than a compulsory shopping stop.

A workshop appointment, hands-on session and shopping visit are different experiences. We’ll ask you to choose and confirm what is available.

Hand-knotted carpets

Ask a willing weaver about the loom, knotting and the time behind a carpet. Confirm that the visit is a demonstration rather than a compulsory sales stop. Materials, origin and any certification must be explained by the seller in writing.

Pashmina, kani and sozni

Explore the distinction between fibre, weaving and embroidery. Choose a shawl-weaving or embroidery appointment according to the artisan’s availability; a retail label alone does not verify a product’s composition or provenance.

Papier-mâché painting

Request an introduction to shaping and painted decoration with a participating maker. A hands-on session needs advance agreement about time, materials, price and what you can take away.

Copper, walnut wood and khatamband

See how useful objects and interiors carry local craft traditions. Select a copperware lane or an appointed woodcraft visit; workshop entry, demonstrations and photography require consent.

Living heritage

Visit with
care and curiosity.

These places are part of everyday life. Worship, community needs and an artisan’s working day come first.

  • Ask before entering any shrine, mosque, temple, gurdwara, workshop or private courtyard. Follow the custodian’s current visitor rules, including any restrictions on particular spaces.
  • Dress modestly; carry a head covering and follow local guidance about shoes and clothing. Keep voices low and do not interrupt worship or photograph people without permission.
  • Prayer, Friday congregations, observances, security arrangements or local closures may change the route. A respectful exterior visit or another stop may replace an interior visit.
  • Pay agreed guide and artisan visit fees fairly. Purchases are optional. Ask for material descriptions, an itemised receipt and shipping or return terms before buying.
  • Confirm the guide, meeting point, walking length, vehicle links, food, tickets, host fees and total in writing. Your quote confirms the guide and visit arrangements.
